UNSDG 13 - Climate Action

https://edu.unicef.org.hk/en/SDG-13

What Is It?

Let’s be honest, here. This will likely be our shortest post yet. At Greenome, we want to deliver only the most essential information. There’s a good chance that if you’re on this post, you are interested, in whatever capacity, in sustainability, so you know the context of this goal already.

The UNSDG 13 is all about climate change, and what can be done to stop it. This underlines the fact that climate change is real and undeniable, and is a threat, whose effects are already visible - and soon to be irreversible and catastrophic. This goal outlines specific, smaller targets, that will allow everyone to take action in their own way. There are five main targets outlined, as follows. Firstly, to “strengthen resilience in adaptive capacity to climate-related disasters”. Secondly, to “integrate Climate change measures into policies and planning”. Thirdly, to “build knowledge and capacity to meet climate change”. Fourthly, to “implement the UN framework convention on climate change”. Fifthly, and lastly, to “promote mechanisms to raise capacity for planning and management”. While these may sound complicated, they can be narrowed down into infrastructure, policy, education, agreement and implementation, and management. This is the part that may be the most useful for you to know, because this takes what we are familiar with - both the really big issues, and the really small solutions, and finds a good middle-ground decomposition that makes sense.

It’s unlikely that this post needs to go over the severity of climate change, as it’s something we’re all familiar with. In fact, we hear about it so often that we get a little bit desensitized to the matter. We’re taught in schools about bushfires across the world, and species dying out, but the very essence of what Greenome tries to tackle is that it seems far away and intangible, especially for the youth. Just remember, as we will outline below, there is lot you can do. The impact of climate change is severe, and we will personally - every single one of us - feel the effects sooner rather than later - but all hope is not lost. There is a reason why a service like Greenome can you need - because enough of you are interested. And enough big organizations (like the UN) care about it!

How Does It Relate to Sustainability?

This next portion will be unprecedented. Again, Greenome only wants to give you relevant information. Repeating why a goal solely about climate action is relevant to sustainability is likely redundant. Let’s move on to how to make this massive undertaking more manageable for all of us.

What Can You Do?

As mentioned before, there’s so much you can do! Yes, the goal is big, but our collective power is bigger. And before we get started, an easy thing to do is to explore Greenome’s restaurant rating page here, to find the most sustainable restaurants near you, and for you to even leave a review!

Learn…

It’s always important to educate yourself, and through the other UNSDG posts on Greenome, you can get a great overview of the issues at hand. Of course, being able to act on your learning is even more important!

Act!

Act some more!

As you can see, there’s tons to do, and there’s no time like the present to do it!
