While planning:
Replace air travel with greener alternatives. Compared to air travel, you can reduce your CO2 emissions between 50%-80% by taking a train/bus/full passenger cars
Plan to stay in environmentally friendly hotels - The United States Green Building Council has developed the LEED program ( [1] https://pinnacle-advisory.com/press-room/what-does-leed-certification-mean-to-the-hotel-industry-presented-by-christine-brown/?_ga=2.247574663.1095562980.1656989681-1479211520.1656989681) which awards a certification level based on a hotel’s sustainability across six environmental categories eg energy and water use, waste management, air quality, etc. This shows worldwide sustainable accommodations: https://www.forbes.com/sites/sandramacgregor/2020/02/16/travel-green-discover-some-of-the-worlds-best-eco-friendly-hotels/?sh=383f6529a6a1&_ga=2.37871523.1095562980.1656989681-1479211520.1656989681 [2]
Pack your own reusable items (eg packing a water bottle rather than purchasing plastic bottles frequently on your trip) and pack light
While on vacation:
Use energy and water like you do at home - it is easy to forget, whilst in hotels and resorts, the environmental impact of utilities like electricities and water. This makes it easy to make unnecessary decisions like leaving the lights or the AC on even when we leave - be mindful!
Use the “Do Not Disturb sign - doing so will inhibit an unnecessary surplus of towels, etc, which will thus reduce the environmental impact on cleaning the towels, linens, etc, that do not need to be cleaned
Use public transport!
(values based on DEFRA emissions factors)
